ANDROS REEF DIVES

See Photos of the type of sea life you will see on the Barrier Reef of Andros

As the Andros Barrier Reef sports the title of third longest in the world, and some claim the most unexplored as well, it goes without saying that the reef systems here are amazing! The reefs offer great variety and particularly rich and varied invertebrate sea life and range from 15 to 70 feet. You can find anything from a 50-foot coral garden with almost every variety of sponge known to The Islands of The Bahamas, to a large sandy area – home to garden eels, upside down jelly fish and curious barracudas.

The Edge of the Wall excursion is a middepth dive through the reefs and pinnacles adjacent to the final drop-off. Giant Staircase is a series of coral platforms that descend in steps toward the ultimate wall. The Gardens is a lovely shallow patch reef formation of dense coral and prolific reef and schooling fish. The Marion shipwreck is a barge, crane and tractor lying in 70 feet of water. Accidentally sunk in 1988, the main hull of the barge is gutted, allowing for diver exploration. An excellent day or night dive, it is home to schools of groupers, snappers and giant Rainbow Parrotfish

THE CORAL GARDENS

Dramatic, gigantic coral and beautiful sea fans greet you in the Coral Gardens. You can glide through this wealth of undersea beauty with angelfish, hogfish, snappers, grunts and blue tang and see lobsters and hermit crabs living under the coral.

MICKEY'S MEANDER

From a drop off to a sand bottom in about 45 feet, you proceed along a horseshoe-shaped reef for about 200 yards to a fabulous cavern. The cavern is about 30 foot long, leading to a hallway with coral walls on each side. This site is gorgeous and teeming with sea life, including huge grouper, moray eels or eagle rays.

LAURA'S FIRST

This 60-foot dive site is a good choice for watching reef sharks, eagle rays, and schools of snapper cruise along. At the end of the dive there are three coral mounds more than 25 feet high.

GROUPER CANYON

This site consists of a series of swim-throughs and shallow chutes that lead you through the reef, with depths ranging from 22 feet to 52 feet. Schools of Bermuda Chubs and Horse-eyed Jacks surround you, while swarms of tropical nurse sharks rest on the sandy bottom. Off in the distance you can see reef sharks heading out to deeper water.
