ANDROS BLUE HOLES

Churches Blue Hole

Below the surface of Andros Island is a complex maze of underwater caves called blue holes. Experienced recreational divers can enter from either the island or ocean entrances and can even retrace the steps of the famous Jacques Cousteau.

Small Hope Lodge has one of the most extensive lists of Blue Hole dives available to sport divers. These include: an ocean Blue Hole and cave system The Big Blue Hole, a cave system beginning in 40 feet which is a regular offering on the Small Hope recreational dive schedule.

PRINCIPLE INLAND BLUE HOLES

Inland blue holes like The Little Frenchman, The Guardian, Captain Bill's Blue Hole and many others offer experienced divers a special thrill. There are hundreds of blue holes on Andros -- many of which are unexplored. Blue holes were originally caves that were flooded at the end of the last ice age, and exploration didn't even begin until the late 1950s.

SOUTH ANDROS

Sanctuary Blue Hole
Stargate Blue Hole
Stargate Blue Hole is located about 500 m inland from the east coast of South Andros Island on the west side of The Bluff village. It is part of a major north-south slump fracture zone paralleling the underwater escarpment that separates the Great Bahama Bank from the Tongue of the Ocean, a deep oceanic trench. This slump fracture extends for tens. For more info, go HERE......

NORTH ANDROS

Guardian Blue Hole

Guardian Blue Hole is one of the largest and deepest faultline caves in the Bahamas. It is the second deepest cave in the Bahamas with a maximum explored depth of 133 m. The cave has two entrances, the smaller being a very small gap between boulders on the floor of the jungle 425 m south of the main entrance pond. The cave was named for a solitary barracuda that at one time inhabited the main entrance pond. Some of the walls of the cave are highly decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. Several deep pits within the cave drop from 45 m depths to more than 130 m.

PRINCIPLE OCEAN BLUE HOLES

wisting canyons, crevices and tunnels of blue hole underwater cave systems draw divers from around the world. At about 40 to 45 feet you find many varieties of coral, fans and fish. The more experienced diver can go deeper to find shells and cave systems at depths up to 130 feet.

SOUTH ANDROS

Atlantis Blue Hole

The "LUSCA"

Atlantis Blue Hole is a massive north/south running faultline system containing one of the largest passages in the Bahamas. The coral rimmed entrance consists of a vertical shaft extending to 40 m depth where a large rift passage begins. This 12 m wide canyon passage has vertical walls extending down to depths of 70 to 85 m. Wreckage of one or more very old boats is located at the bottom of the entrance shaft. According to local lore, the "Lusca", a mythical monster, inhabits ocean blue holes and suck down unwary mariners to their doom. For more info, go HERE

Exley's Boiling Hole (2 entrances)

Four Shark Blue Hole
Four Shark Cave is an offshore ocean blue hole located inside the barrier reef, along the fault line 5 km northwest of Dolly Cays, South Andros. The entrance is a coral rimmed basin about 10 m deep that opens into one of the largest caverns in the Bahamas. This 70 m long, 20 m wide chamber known as the Kalik Cavern extends to 60 m depth. At the far end of the cavern, a narrow crack at 40 m depth descends into a continuation of the fissure with depths from 50 to 105 m or greater. In the entrance zone, the bottom consists of sand and fine white silt. Strong tidal currents exchange reef water with that from the interior of the cave
